- Best Song: Us And Them
Echoes: The Best Of Pink Floyd contains some of the best material that Pink Floyd has to offer. Whether this is an essential purchase is another matter entirely. The problem's that some of their best songs ("Echoes", "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", "Marooned", "High Hopes", "Sheep" to name a few) are sadly truncated. But, then again, it's nice to see them recognize their past, with Syd appearing regularly throughout.
[edit] Info
- The compilation spans Pink Floyd's career from their first single "Arnold Layne" in 1967, to "High Hopes", the final track from their last studio album The Division Bell. Each of the twenty-six tracks non-chronologically segues from one to the next with no break in the music (apart from a disc switch after thirteen tracks), courtesy of James Guthrie. This was done to help recreate the concept-album feel. All twenty-six tracks were newly remastered specifically for this compilation.
- This is criticized by hardcore Pink Floyd fans for the lack of material from More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, and Obscured By Clouds, and just as much for the truncating of "Echoes", "Marooned", "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" "Sheep", and "High Hopes". It can be argued, however, that the compilation's geared more towards casual and new fans of the band, rather than hardcore fans who already own all Pink Floyd albums. Echoes lacks many of the little-known classics that fans have come to love through the years, and also devoid of any new material that many bands include in a 'best of' collection.
- The album's artwork is a collage of well-known Pink Floyd images, including screenshots from music videos, LP artwork and single artwork. On the front cover there is the diver, businessman and blowing veil from Wish You Were Here, the rower and lake from The Rower, a porcelain pig and cow from Animals and Atom Heart Mother, The Division Bell heads in miniature, a plane in reference to "Learning To Fly" and a picture of the ear underwater from Meddle.
- These are the songs that were considered for inclusion, according to James Guthrie:
- "Interstellar Overdrive" (Barrett, Waters, Wright, Mason)
- "Chapter 24" (Barrett)
- "The Scarecrow" (Barrett)
- "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" (Waters, Wright, Gilmour, Mason)
- "Grantchester Meadows" (Waters)
- "Atom Heart Mother Suite" (abridged) (Waters, Wright, Gilmour, Mason, Geesin)
- "If" (Waters)
- "Summer '68" (Wright)
- "Fat Old Sun" (Gilmour)
- "Fearless" (Gilmour, Waters)
- "San Tropez" (Waters)
- "Breathe" (Waters, Gilmour, Wright)
- "Brain Damage" (Waters)
- "Eclipse" (Waters)
- "Dogs" (Waters, Gilmour)
- "Mother" (Waters)
- "Young Lust" (Waters, Gilmour)
- "Nobody Home" (Waters)
- "Your Possible Pasts" (Waters)
- "The Gunner's Dream" (Waters)
- "Paranoid Eyes" (Waters)
